WATER RESTORATION
Category Two (Gray Water)
INTRODUCTION
Category 2, or gray water floods, originate from sources that contain a significant level of contami- nation and have the potential to cause illness to humans. These sources may be from overflows from dishwashers, washing machines, toilets or seepage from aquariums or waterbeds. It is important to remove the water as quickly as possi- ble. Gray water that remains untreated more than 48 hours may escalate to a Category 3 (black water) flood. This will be discussed in another brochure.

PROCEDURE
STEP 1
Complete an authorization and consent form,
and have the insured sign and date it.
STEP 2
Identify health and safety hazards of the job. When a structure has been flooded with Category 2 water, a threat to human health exists. Look for electrical problems or gas leaks. Post warning signs where needed to notify anyone who may enter the structure of potential hazards. Provide all technicians with proper PPE (personal protective equipment) that will be needed to perform the job safely. Determine if evacuation of sensitive persons is needed. Infants, elderly and those with immune deficiencies are at a higher risk.

STEP 3
Significant evaluation of all structure materials and contents is a must. Determine if items can SurveyMaster, Hygrometer and Moisture Meters

HELPFUL HINTS & CAUTIONS –
It is imperative that anyone who performs water restoration attends an IICRC Water Damage Class. You will learn the proper fundamentals of water restoration, and be trained to identi- fy the different categories of water sources. This is extremely important to protect you and your technicians from harm, as well as protect the customer from improper drying techniques causing illness or worse. You take on a certain lia- bility when you accept a water loss job, and it is important that you perform all aspects of the restoration properly. There are additional specialty classes that you may wish to attend to learn more about structural drying and mold remedia- tion. This provides another avenue of income for your company, as well as need- ed services for the home and property owner.

Locate and eliminate the source of incoming water. Determine the category of the water source. If it is Category 3, follow procedures outlined to mitigate the loss under those condi- tions. (Discussed in another brochure)
STEP 5 Prevent cross-contamination by turning off air handling systems and covering supply and return vents. In some cases, building a con- tainment chamber with polyethylene sheeting and negative air pressure may be required.
STEP 6 Furnishings, contents and all other items should be moved to an unaffected area to pre- vent contamination by migrating water.
STEP 7 Extract water from carpet and pad using the Water Claw by Hydro-Force. This tool removes about 90% of the water in the carpet and padding, without disengaging the carpet. Be sure to inspect other areas such as crawl spaces, stairwells, elevator shafts, and even HVAC systems or ductwork for additional standing water. You may need special tools or pumps to remove water from these areas. All tools, hoses, machines, and recovery tanks must be cleaned and decontaminated after use.
STEP 8 Apply a heavy saturation spray of a biocide to all affected surfaces. This is not a complete disinfecting. This is to reduce the growth of microorganisms as quickly as possible. Pay particular attention to carpet surface and backing, sub-floor, tackless strip, baseboards and wall bottom plate areas. Follow all direc- tions on the label of the bottle.
STEP 9 Drying of structure and materials should next be considered. Installation of professional dry- ing equipment such as turbo dryers and dehu- midifiers is recommended to dry the structure as quickly and safely as possible. You need to reduce the indoor humidity level to between 30% and 50% RH as quickly as possible and keep the ambient air temperature at or below 72 degrees F. (follow all principles of drying). Use the Science of Psychrometry to determine the best drying procedure, (open or closed sys- tem). Monitor drying procedures closely using appropriate tools such as a Thermo-hygrome- ter or one of the various types of Moisture Meters.
STEP 10 Discard and dispose of unsalvageable items safely and properly. The carpet cushion must be disposed of in a Category 2 or Category 3 flood, without exception. Stuffed materials such as furniture, pillows, mattresses and stuffed animals must also be discarded. Highly absorbent structural materials such as ceiling tiles, drywall, books and papers will need to be disposed of and replaced.
STEP 11 Structural materials such as paneling, plaster and wood will need to be evaluated to deter- mine if they can be restored or if they need to be replaced. Some demolition may be neces- sary to expose pockets of contamination.
STEP 12 If you intend to restore the carpet, apply a spray of biocide to both sides and allow appro- priate dwell time.
STEP 13 Perform a post-flood cleaning of the carpet using the hot- water extraction method to all of the affected and surrounding areas that may have been contaminated from foot traffic. Follow standard carpet cleaning techniques as outlined in Bridgepoint’s residential or com- mercial carpet cleaning brochures. Upon completion of a thorough cleaning procedure, apply a second application of biocide. It is recommended that you use a disinfectant appropriate for sewage back-flows.
